Computer Problemson 09/05/2013 at 7:56 pm
I just came back from doing Sabotencon in Phoenix, AZ. While I was out of town, my computer started to fritz. The resident tech expert and I have been trying to get at least one of our computers together so that I can draw, but it’s not looking good right now. I really need a replacement, but I don’t have the money for it.
When I switched over to doing this comic completely digital, I started using a tablet PC. It’s a convertible laptop with a wacom technology screen so that you can draw directly to it with as much pressure sensitivity as a Cintiq. This makes drawing and inking fluid enough that I can do entirely digital pages in a reasonable amount of time. The problem is that it’s getting very old and outdated at this point. The next model up costs something like $1200, which is ridiculous and completely out of the question for my level of income.
I do have an Intuos 4 tablet, but when I use it to do digital comics, it takes almost triple the amount of time, and the end result is not nearly as polished. So while it’s possible, I think I’d rather switch back to traditional if it came to that.
The other alternative is that I could get an older model Cintiq used, but that still will run about $700; which will take me several months to earn.
So, the bottom line is that I may end up going to traditional media for a little while. That’s going to cause an artistic inconsistency, but I’m not sure what else to do about the problem.
Anyway, I think I’m going to take a break so that I can figure out what to do. If I do go back to traditional, then I still need to clear out space in my living room to draw in, and buy some art supplies.
Sorry about the delay on the pages. I’ll do my best to keep you updated as to the situation, and get back to regular updates ASAP.
